Floyd County Indiana Vote Centers

On February 15, 2012 a Study Group met to discuss the future of elections in Floyd County. The group included county council and commissioner members, political party members, poll workers, advocates for persons with special needs and the public. The meetings were called by the Floyd County Election Board and by November, 2012 we had a unanimously adopted Vote Center Plan with new election machines and e-poll books from the election company RBM. Vote Centers have been successfully piloted in several Indiana Counties and we are excited to join them.

The Vote Center concept allows the voter to have more flexibility in where they vote. Under the precinct elections the voter is required to go to their assigned polling site. In every election there are a multitude of voters at the wrong location and they then have to travel to the correct polling site; in this scenario often times the voter couldn’t get to polls before it closed or didn’t or couldn’t want to take the time to go to another location.

A vote Center concept allows the County Commissioners to designate vote center locations and the voter can stop and vote at ANY vote center. There are several early voting sites available as early as two weeks before an Election. Voters still have the option to vote absentee by mail or by Travel Board.
