Transforming Lives Outside the Classroom

At Metro United Way, our goal is to ensure every child in our community succeeds in school and life. Research shows that quality out-of-school time (OST) programs lead to positive outcomes for the youth that attend them, including time spent on homework, an increase in academic achievement, more enjoyment and effort in school as well as better behavior. This is why we support high-quality OST programs like Collaborative Learning After School Program (CLASP), committed to transforming the lives of our youth at Meyzeek Middle School inside and outside the classroom.

Created by Family and Children's Place, CLASP provides an ideal environment to cultivate youth's learning and improve academic performance through enrichment activities such as daily homework help, service learning projects, life skills and peer relationship groups that focus on team building, leadership skills, anger management techniques and reduction of risk-taking behaviors. The program also includes family nights and field trips each semester to engage parents and foster positive interaction between students and their families.

"My sister and I were approached to join CLASP after we attended a free lunch program at Meyzeek last summer and since I joined, I've learned so much!" said Altwon. "I do my homework, focus more in school and help my community," he explained. "I also have met new friends and I feel safe, doing the right things and making better choices in my life."

High quality OST programs such as CLASP are needed to help students thrive personally and academically. By creating a safe and nurturing environment designed to support academic success, our youth will be set on the path to graduate high school on time prepared to succeed in college, work and life.
